Activities on Fraser Island
Fraser Island is a 170,000 hectare recreational park containing lakes, creeks, sandunes and rainforest, affording a variety of experiences including fishing, 4wdriving, camping, walking tracks and much, much more. From the famous 75 mile beach through to the breathtaking Lake Mckenzie, the glorious rocky outcrop of Indian Head and Champagne Pools, Fraser Island caters for couples wanting a romantic getaway through to those undertaking the great aussie camping holiday. The island itself is approximately 123 kilometres long and 22 kilometres at its widest section and is the world’s largest sand island.
Activities at Lake Mackenzie
Activities available on the island include fishing, 4 wheel driving, camping, sand tobogganing, swimming, surfing (for the brave or stupid!), bird watching, hiking/bushwalking, turtle/dugong spotting, whale watching (June-Nov), and joy flights.
Some of the most popular areas for lunch or just a break from the car are:
- Central Station. This is an old logging village from the days when tree felling was allowed on Fraser Island. It makes a great place for a picnic and has toilet facilities. You can also start your trek to Lake Wabby from here along Wanggoolba Creek.
- Indian Head. This rocky out crop was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when he spotted a group of Aboriginals on the rocks and named it Indian Head.
- Lake Mckenzie. Voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches with its fine silica sand. Have a relaxing swim or polish your jewellery in the fine sand surrounding the lake.
