BATS ON FRASER ISLAND
Bats are divided into 2 sub orders in Australia. These are the categories of Mega and Micro. Mega bats are found on Fraser Island in the form of Flying foxes or Fruit bats. The main characteristics of these bats are that they have small ears, their faces resemble dogs or foxes and they tend to use night vision and smell to detect food and navigate the night skies. The other main characteristic of the Mega Bats are that they live on fruit and nectar only.
Micro bats live on insects alone bar one carnivorous species. They use sonic radar system as well as some vision to navigate through vegetation as well as detecting and catching their prey. One of the most common Micro bats found on Fraser Island are the Mastiff Bat. These bats can be seen racing through the forests around any of the resorts. If you spend some time under a lamp at night along a pathway or track you will see these bats travelling at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour catching insects on the wing.
