The Fraser Island Great Walk
Over 90 kilometres of walking tracks were opened on Fraser Island in 2004. The tracks run from Happy Valley on the middle of the eastern side of the island and travel south toward Dilli Village. You can spend up to 8 days on the tracks. Alternatively, you can choose to walk a short section of the track as a day walk up or if you are feeling energetic, you can cover the full distance. There are no provisions during the walk so everything you require must be carried on your person. We recommend that you always travel in groups of 2 or more, wear sun smart clothing, carry a plentiful supply of water, wear sturdy walking boots, take a first aid kit and always plan to reach your destination well before sunset. You can camp overnight at several locations during your walk.
There are NO toilet facilities and human waste must be buried at least 50cm deep. Fresh water is available at each camp but may have to be treated first. These sites must be booked in advance and you must have camping permits for each site you stay at on the island. The sites are also shown on the map below and there is a maximum stay of 2 nights.

How to get to the Great Walk
To start your Great Walk you can catch one of the 3 barges from Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay or River Heads listed on this site and follow the directions listed below.
From Rainbow Beach the ferry will drop you at hook point (see map). The easiest way to get on the track is to disembark from barge and walk approximately 100m to right to enter the high tide inland access track. Fraser Island Great Walk interpretive shelter is on the left.
From River Heads Ferry. The ferry will drop you at Wanggoolba Creek. Once on the island you walk about 2 kilometres along the main road to Bennett’s Creek firebreak, opposite Ungowa turnoff. Fraser Island Great Walk interpretive shelter is on the left
From the Hervey Bay Ferry Terminal (Urangan Boat Harbour) the easiest way to get on the track is to walk along the jetty then take the jetty road to the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village roundabout. Turn right and pass the tennis courts, store and petrol pumps. Continue up the driveway, crossing the Kingfisher Hill vehicle track. Follow this single-lane bitumen road to the right approximately 100m to the Fraser Island Great Walk interpretive display. If you get lost just ask at Reception for directions.
