Getting to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is located about 3 hours drive North of Brisbane (approximately 300 kilometres) and around 2 hours North of Noosa. You simply follow the Bruce Highway out of Brisbane, through Gympie (about 1 1/2 hours from Brisbane) then take the Maryborough exit. From Maryborough follow the signs to Hervey Bay, which takes about half an hour.
The town consists of around 50,000 residents and is famous for fishing, boating, holidaying, but it is probably most famous for its seasonal visits by Humpback Whales (June to November). The car/passenger ferry terminals are located at the south-east end of the bay which can be reached by following Boat Harbour Drive all the way to the end and making a left hand turn. Once you have finalised you hire arrangements with us you can collect your National Park Permits and Vehicle Access from the barge landing sites. The ferry takes between 25 and 40 minutes to reach the island from which you are then ready to undertake you 4wd adventure.
The Kingfisher passenger ferry runs from Urangan Boat Harbour and costs $48 return (adult), $24 return (child) and runs 4 times daily. You can also travel on the Fraser Dawn Vehicle and Passenger ferry from Urangan for $110 per vehicle (this is a return trip and includes up to 4 adults). Extra passengers are $6 per person return. Both barges take around 45 minutes.
